WHOIS Database

WHOIS Database contains registration information for every domain registered with a particular registrar.

• Every year, millions of individuals, organisations register domain names. Each one must provide information, this information is referred to as WHOIS data.
• It stores and publicly display the domain name information, such as creation, expiration dates and various contact details.
• The information in the WHOIS database is available to anyone who does a WHOIS search for a particular domain.

When you register a domain name, the information is collected as per the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers(ICANN) regulations for domain name registrars.

WHOIS databases are maintained by the individual registrars and not by the central registry.

• WHOIS databases are mainly run by registrars and registries.
• When you register a domain name, they pass on the contact details to the WHOIS database.
• They are not always up to date, most systems are updated every 24 hours.

We can also download entire WHOIS database from the internet. Based on :

• Country specific such as US, India, China etc.
• Domain Extension specific such as .com, .in, .net etc.
• Domain Registrar specific such as GoDaddy.com, etc.
