CODECS for Images


CODEC :

A codec is a technical name for compression/decompression. It also stands for compressor/decompressor and code/decode.
  • It is a compression standard that compress data to enable faster transmission and decompress receiving data.
  • As large files become difficult to transfer across internet quickly we need codecs to transfer files.
  • Without codecs downloads would take three to five times longer than they do now.

Codecs For Images :

It is a method of compression/decompression of image files.
  • There are various kinds of image codecs implemented by different companies by different algorithms.
  • These are different from each other based on the compression technology used or OS supported etc.
  • Various image codecs are listed as :
    • BMP
    • JPEG
    • TIFF
    • PNG
    • GIF

BMP :
  • High quality photo.
  • Easily created by existing pixel data in the array.
  • BMP codecs are limited to RGB images.
JPEG :
  • IT has low complexity.
  • Allows you to reduce the size.
  • Single resolution and single quality.
TIFF :
  • Best quality with low or high resolution.
  • Larger file sizes
PNG :
  • Better than GIF codec.
  • Doesn't support animation.
GIF :
  • Allows transparent graphics.
  • Universally supported by all browsers.
  • Limited to 256 colors.
NEF codec on images and meta data in the windows file explorer.
