Vector Graphics

Vector graphics is the creation of digital images through a sequence of commands or mathematical statements in a given two dimensional or three dimensional space.
  • A files describes a series of points to be connected which are defined by a start and end point.
  • These paths are used to create simple drawing and complex diagrams.
  • The path can be line, a shape, a triangle or a curvy shape.

They look much better when scaled, as they are based on curves, lines, and shapes rather than pixels.
  • So they don't have any jagged edges, they remain sharp and crisp at any size.
  • And images stored as vector look much better on devices with high resolution, where as bit mapped images always appear the same.
Advantages of Vector Graphics :
  • Images can be easily created.
  • Can easily converted to raster.
  • Quality is never lost even after scaling.
  • Easy to re-edit.
  • Smaller in file sizes.
  • Looks good in print.
Vector graphics are generated by illustration software such as
  • Adobe Illustrator : .ai, .ait, .art
  • Corel Draw : .cdraw, .cdr, .cdt
  • Digital line graph : .dlg, .do
  • Open Office : .odg
